Boston Celtics complete the best trade in team history.

The Celtics trade Ed Macauley and a draft pick to the St. Louis Hawks for the second pick in the upcoming National Basketball Association draft, which the they use to select Bill Russell. Celtics owner Walter Brown also gets the Rochester Royals, who hold the first pick, to agree not to select Russell by promising a one-week appearance of the Ice Capades in that city every year.
